You finally make your decision.  You’re going to go for it.  You’re going for the dream.

You’re opening the restaurant you always dreamed of having.

You’re pursuing your passion for art and design.

You’re going freelance and finally leaving the world of 9-5.

You’re taking your “side business” and investing in it to make it your full-time business.

You’re taking a sabbatical from your “good job” and are not sure what you’re going to do next.

You’re excited!  You want to announce it to the world.  You’re facing some of your biggest fears and finally going for it because…well, you just have no choice, right?

You start telling your friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues.  You describe in detail what you’re planning, what your dream for your life really is.

You get resistance. 

“Are you kidding me? You know most small businesses fail.”

“My friend tried freelancing.  She couldn’t make it.  She’s temping now.”

“Why would you risk your job for something you’re not sure you can make happen?”

“I’m not trying to dissuade you, [fname], but you know you’ve tried so many things and can’t seem to find what makes you happy.  What if this is just another one of your random ideas?”

“Why are you in such a hurry?  Just wait until things settle down…”

They think they are helping you.  You know they’re not.  You start doubting yourself.  That negative inner voice slips in while you weren’t looking…

“Who do you think you are?  What makes you think you can have such a dream life?  You can’t make it work.  You should be happy with what you have.  You don’t really have what it takes to make this dream of yours come true…”

ENOUGH!

When you have a dream or goal you want to accomplish I can guarantee you two things:

1. Others will doubt you.

2. You faith in yourself will be tested.

Many people will not get what you’re doing.  They won’t understand what you’re trying to achieve.  Stop trying to convince them your ideas are worthy.  What’s more important is that YOU KNOW for yourself that your ideas are worthy. 

For your dream business and life to happen you must believe in yourself no matter what others think.  You must look inward and listen to what your intuition is saying.  When you’re not coming from a place of fear and self-doubt, how do you feel about living your life’s passion?  Is this what you were put on this earth to do?  Get it?

Know without a shadow of a doubt that you WILL succeed.  You WILL make it.  You could have everyone standing on your side cheering you on but if you’re not 110% positive that you can achieve your desires, you will not make it.  The one requirement necessary for success above all else is that YOU believe in yourself.

Today’s Action Guide

When others start doubting you or your own insecurities start creeping in stop what you’re doing and:

1. Get a clear picture in your mind’s eye of what you are working towards.  Visualize yourself having already succeeded.

2. Feel the feelings of what it’s like to be a success.

3. Repeat.

See and feel your success as if it has already happened.  Do this over and over and over and over again.  Others may think you’re crazy but it won’t matter anymore.  You’ll know you’re doing the right thing for you!

I have some important news to share with you…

One thing I have learned as my own boss is that nothing stays the same.  Just as I help others through their transitions, I’ve come to take my own advice and have stepped into this transition.  This is not my first transition and I know it will not be my last!

Ok, so you have finally landed an interview with a top company for a great job. Now the nervous energy starts to flow in your veins…you realize you have to sit down with another human being, one-on-one, in a closed office, and prove to them that you are the perfect candidate for their job opening. 

Interviewing is known to be one of the most feared situations that we humans face – it’s up there with the fear of death!  So, how do you normally prepare for the interview?  How do you set yourself up to successfully answer a series of questions about your work experience, skills and accomplishments?  If you are like most people you will either do nothing at all and ‘wing’ the interview, or you may try to anticipate what questions will be asked and will have your list of strengths and weaknesses ready to review with the interviewer.  The problem is, how can you possibly guess which questions you will be asked when there are an infinite number of questions that could be thrown at you?  The truth is: you can’t.  But there is good news. 

Most companies today don’t follow old-school interview styles – asking you hypothetical questions or about your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes.  The most common and more successful interview is known among Human Resources professionals and hiring managers as behavior-based interviewing.  The theory behind it is that as a candidate, the best way to predict your future performance in their job is to closely examine your past performance.  Your past performance is the single best indicator of what your future performance will be.  The focus will also be on the outcomes and results you provided. 

Most often, the hiring team has identified a specific set of capabilities or skills they are looking for in the person that will fill their available position.  They will ask you structured questions that are based on these competencies.  They will want to understand how your experience and skills will work in their job and environment. 

As an interviewer conducting a behavior-based interview, it is best to ask about specific examples of work the candidate has done and then probe into the details.  A skilled interviewer will guide you through the series of questions and give you time to answer.  The interviewer is looking for you to provide him or her with evidence of your capabilities.  A well-trained interviewer will rarely ask closed-end questions or questions that have yes or no answers, unless they are related to specific skills.  They would also avoid hypothetical questions, since anyone can say what they would do in a given situation if they have a good imagination.  However, it is very different to ask how a candidate has handled him/herself in a highly specific situation they already encountered.  Here are some specific examples of typical behavior-based questions: 

• Give me an example of a time that you were juggling numerous tasks.  How did you prioritize the tasks?  What was the outcome?
• Tell me about a time when you offered a creative solution to a problem.  How did you come up with the idea?  What were the results? 
• Tell me about your style as a manager.  How would your employees describe you?  How do you like to be managed by your manager in order to get the best out of you? 
• Tell me about a team that you worked on that was highly successful/challenging.  What worked well?  What didn’t?  What was your role? What did you learn from working on this team?

You can prepare yourself to answer questions like these by coming up with 8-10 stories that address common areas like: team work and collaboration, supervising, how you interact with your boss, problem-solving, handling clients, conflict, decision-making, multi-tasking, projects, challenges, etc.  This way you will have an arsenal of stories you can tweak a little bit to answer all the different questions they may throw at you!

Doubting your own abilities, potential to make a change, or chances of being successful will certainly guarantee you won’t succeed. Wouldn’t it makes sense to deal with those negative feelings? You might say, “Well what if they are true?” The truth is what you feel about yourself and your dreams when you are at your best…when you are feeling centered, calm, and connected to your true power.

Does that make sense? Do you know what I’m talking about? The truth about you and your potential in this life is what you know when you have the moments of clarity–when you can see what is possible for your life.

That’s the truth.

The rest? Well, it’s all that junk I talked about in my clear the junk out episode.

So make a DECISION to deal with any feelings of doubt or fear so you can start spending energy where it will make sense…on making your life’s purpose a reality!
